Cleaning Tip #16 - Vacuuming
Vacuuming is a simple thing. But here are a few pointers for vacuuming and taking care of your vacuum.
What tips or tricks do you have for vacuuming or taking care of your vacuum?
Hello, this is Michael with Heaven's Best Carpet Cleaning. I just wanted to share a couple tips with you about how to vacuum.
I know it's a simple thing, but I just wanted to share a couple tips that we use every day when we vacuum.
Now one of the things that the Carpet & Rug Institute recommends when you're vacuuming, to get a thorough vacuuming, is to go back and forth on the same spot seven times. Now, nobody's going to do that, so the best thing to do is to follow these tips we're going to tell you about.
When you vacuum, the best suction comes when you pull the vacuum back because the way this bar under here is spinning. When you're going along edges you can go and get your edges, pretend that this is your edge, wall, or baseboard, you go along the edge and hit that, it's going to leave a little strip about that wide. The best thing to do is to go along the edge like this. You don't want to mark up your baseboard, but that's where you're going to get the best suction is going along the edges like this.
Now you can see this tube coming up, and this is where the suction power comes. So if you're trying to suck something up, the best suction is going to be on this side on most vacuums, especially if you can see a tube coming up. That's where the most suction is on, is on the side that the tube is coming up because that's where it's pulling it up. Over here it's not going to have as much suction power. The best suction power is going to be on this side.
Now one of the things to be careful of when you're vacuuming, is to watch for little things like this. Like legos, or paperclips, or hair pins, things like that. That will break your motor if it gets in the motor, or it it'll definitely break the belt that helps this little bar under here spin.
Now when you're vacuuming, you want to do it about once a week. And we're going to talk about in just a second keeping this bar clean.
This bar is called a beater bar. And what it does is it rotates and these little brushes is what pretty much agitates your carpet. And then that's what loosens up the dry dirt and the stuff that's in your carpet and then it gets sucked into your vacuum.
And that's how a vacuum works, there's the suction power, but really it needs to have this beater bar to agitate the carpet, to break up the dry dirt. And then it sucks it in here.
Now one of the things that you want to make sure of, like in here, is there's strings and stuff. If you get enough string or long hair in your vacuum, this will not spin as well. So you can either pull it out like I just did with this. Or if it gets stuck in there and you can't pull it out or there's a big glob of hair - usually it accumulates right here where it's sucking into the vacuum - you can grab a razor blade. And don't feel bad about cutting into this bar, that bar is made of pretty sturdy stuff. So you just cut and you can pull it out a lot easier. So this one I can't pull out unless I cut it.
There you go, and that's how you maintain this beater bar so that way it will clean your carpet a lot easier and a lot better.
